Event Summary

On October 2, 2021, the Taiwanese Association of Hispanists hosted its inaugural online workshop, "University Spanish Teaching Workshop." Moderated by Professor Mario Santander (NCCU), the session featured three experienced instructors sharing innovative pedagogical approaches and linguistic theories to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes, especially in the context of remote education.

Presentation Highlights

1. Gamifying My Classes

Speaker: Ms. Laura Vela (Associate Professor, Wenzao Ursuline University) Highlights:

  • Flipped Classroom: Introduced tools like Kahoot! and "juego del ahorcado" to integrate game elements into Spanish instruction.
  • Boosting Motivation: Successfully increased student participation and passion in remote learning environments through gamified interactions.
  • Data-Driven Teaching: Shared how to analyze common student errors from game results to adjust teaching focus, while discussing challenges like identity verification in online tests.

2. Derivational Morphology in ELE: Practice in Reading and Writing

Speaker: Ms. Beatriz Valverde (Assistant Professor, Fu Jen Catholic University) Highlights:

  • Structural Analysis: Emphasized the importance of analyzing word structures (roots, prefixes, suffixes) to help students rapidly expand their vocabulary.
  • Logical Deduction: Guided students to deduce the meaning of new words based on morphological logic and encouraged creative "word-making."
  • Common Pitfalls: Advised teachers to watch for logical errors in morphological analysis and provided suggestions for correction.

3. Suggestions for Teaching the Spanish Indicative Past Tenses

Speaker: Mr. Juan Sanmartín (Lecturer, Providence University) Highlights:

  • Tense Confusion: Analyzed common confusions among Taiwanese students regarding the Pretérito Indefinido, Imperfecto, and Pluscuamperfecto.
  • Medium of Instruction: Discussed whether to use English tenses to explain Spanish grammar. The speaker advocated for Spanish-specific logic, while other professors suggested English as a helpful bridge.
  • Architecture of Thought: Cited Academician Ignacio Bosque's view that grammar teaching should focus on situational context and logical flow rather than mere terminology translation.
